Once upon a time, there was a girl called Sarah, she loved vintage bags, and spent her years marveling at their beauty travelling to vintage fairs in London and beyond, hopelessly (at the time) dreaming of having a beautiful collection of her own.
Ok so this is my story but this is not a story, this is real life and buying a bag pre-loved is no fairy tale, it can be risky. More often than not we can end up being duped into buying a bag that is not vintage and most importantly not genuine. With that statement lingering in the air I am going share my thoughts on this subject.
I like to see myself as quite a smart buyer, I always do my research and I always shop around. Even though that bag on that vintage online retailer looks amazing and the price seems incredible, let me be clear if it seems to good to be true it often means that it is. Even if the pictures look like the genuine article, there is the fear that the bag you want to purchase might not be the one shown in the photograph and therefore not be genuine. I talk from experience, we learn from our mistakes and I have been burned in the past, my example being when I purchased a Dior saddle bag and the bag ended up being completely fake! Quality comes with a price. A fantastic offer can often be a fantasy offer and the bag you have spent your hard earned cash on can turn out to be not a genuine article.
My most asked question from clients, family and friends is where do I buy my pre-loved designer bags? Who do I trust? With that question hanging over my head I wanted to talk to you all about a place you can trust.
Like Spidermans Uncle Ben said, ‘with great power comes great responsibility’. As somebody who writes, shares and photographs products and places I love, I have an integral responsibility to be honest and genuine and to only talk about companies I trust. So without further delay let me introduce my secret weapon and this place even has a super hero like name to go with it, the wonderful XUPES www.xupes.com
They make buying pre-loved fun and most importantly safe. They thoroughly check each and every item they buy and sell and only purchase bags that are in excellent or near excellent condition. I randomly stumbled onto this company while looking for a vintage box shape Chanel Jumbo in tan. As soon as I found one via the Xupes website I decided to contact them. Now a lot of online pre-loved retailers don’t have offices or showrooms but Xupes do and wow do they. They are based within the beautiful Essex countryside in a converted barn of sorts. offering complimentary delivery for both UK and International orders. I could have ordered the bag online but I wanted to see the bag, meet the bag expert and get a feel for the company. Like I said previously I take my bag buying seriously. This is a lot of money we are talking about after all. I was greeted on my first visit by a Xupes representative who led me into a room which is affectionately known by the Xupes team as ‘The Wonder Room’, it has glass cabinets on the wall filled with rare treasures from watches to antiques, to most importantly for me handbags. My representative obviously being used to the reaction I had from walking into the room simply smiled. Once my normal breathing had returned and my heart no longer beating like a stampede of elephants, I was presented with a drink menu and a Cappuccino was ordered. Not to long after, Reece the super glamorous handbag expert walked in, he placed the Jumbo onto the table and the stampede of elephants around my heart continued. It was perfect and even better than I had hoped and so began my Xupes obsession.
Xupes is split into four departments. Watches, antiques, jewellery and of course bags. So far I have dealt with the watches and handbag departments and I have been very impressed. They value every visitor whether you are there to buy, sell or just view an item. There is never any pressure and they are always ready to talk you through every item.
I have sold many bags to Xupes over the years and I have purchased from them too. My new to me Chanel watch being a most recent buy. What I love about Xupes is that they really know their stuff and they research every item they sell. Their website is full of beautiful limited edition items at very competitive prices. I had the pleasure of visiting them a couple of weeks ago and they kindly opened their bag vaults for me to photograph a few of my favourite pieces. Being able to play with an array of stunning bags is my idea of heaven. And so it goes Xupes being cemented into my hall of fame of brands I love.
Most importantly and above all I trust Xupes, and trust is certainly the most integral part of buying any pre-loved luxury item.
