Calling a WOC a WOC not a Wallet on Chain

So I wrote most of this blog post a month ago. And I was going to publish it a couple of weeks ago then I had a unfortunate experience in Chanel Selfridges (in the shoe department) while with friends. So I decided not to publish this article. But the more I thought about what happened the more I realised that I shouldn’t let somebody I don’t know somebody irrelevant to me dictate what I do…This is what happened, myself and two of my friends asked to view a small trendy bag which was on the top shelf it had a security tag so we couldn’t take it down ourselves. We were asked to wait while a SA became available. ‘Of course’ my friend said and sat down chatting away. Some time passed and a lady arrived to help us she reached up and brought the bag down. Thank you we said and she handed it to my friend. ‘It’s beautiful I said to my friend I love the style you have the WOC version don’t you?’ Before my friend even had time to answer the SA said ‘it is not called a WOC that is not the correct term it is a common term and we do not use that in Chanel.’ I was taken aback and I felt my stomach drop. Was she calling me common? Was she saying that I am not good enough for Chanel? Because that is what I felt in that moment. I looked at my other friend the one who was not holding the bag she responded to the Woman that is what we call it and we can call it what we like. Feeling more confident I turned back to the SA and said with as much attitude as I could (which apparently according to my friend later wasn’t so much) I was talking to my friends and we all know what a WOC refers to. What would you call this bag’ pointing at the Trendy still in my perplexed friends hand. She replied ‘we refer to this as a black bag’ I responded well maybe you should have a word with the handbag department downstairs because they referred to it as the Trendy bag. Realising something was not ok with us she said would you like some water or is there anything else you would like to look at. I responded no and got up we all walked out. The reason I am sharing this is because I know how daunting it can feel when you walk into a luxury boutique to make a purchase and sadly rude SAs like this lady do exist. But what I want you all to know is that they are not important. Buy the bags, watches, jewellery or clothes you love and ignore the ones who try to ruin the experience. It says more about them then it says about you. You are good enough. Now this is the post I wanted to publish a couple of weeks ago and it’s all about the WOC. I hope you enjoy it.A couple of months ago while having lunch with a friend the subject of bags came up. To be honest with you all, bags do tend to come up regularly in most of my conversations. Along with cake and cats obviously. But this one was more specific. She asked me a question, a question I do get asked a lot….if you were to start your Chanel collection again which bag would you start with. I have always in the past alluded to the answer. There are lots of Chanel bags I love the Vintage jumbo (please see my previous post on vintage Chanel’s to see why I love this bag so much.) The boy bag, this bag suits my everyday style, it’s classic with a edge. The Deauville, oh how I love this big roomie bag and then the bag I am going to talk about today the Wallet On Chain. The wallet on chain, or as it is known amongst us bag addicts the ‘WOC.’ This bag is a multitasking wonder of a bag. It’s a evening bag it looks amazing worn with a little black dress or a tuxedo. Or even during the day, casually flung on crossbody for those supermarket runs when all one needs are keys and cards and a pack of tissues. You could even fit a lipstick in there and a pack of gum. I travel a lot for work and leisure and you can be assured I always travel with my WOC it’s the perfect size for a passport and boarding pass. forget rummaging around inside your carry on this crossbody bag is a timesaver. My passport sits in there with my boarding pass ready for that last minute suncream buying panic or that early start skinny cappuccino. When your mind is a pre 7am foggy mess and trying to locate your wallet in a messy carry on is just not going to happen. If you are worried about the strict one handbag policy worry not you can tuck the WOCs chain into the bag and tada you have a travel wallet. See I told you this bag is amazing.  The wallet on chain was introduced as a wallet that could be worn on the shoulder. The idea is that it’s a multi use product with no primary category is it a bag or is it a wallet well it’s both. Like I mentioned above the chain can be tucked inside so that this bag can be used as a large wallet or clutch. It has all the features you would expect from any well equipped wallet it has card slots lots and lots of card slots enough for all those credit and debit cards and coffee loyalty cards. It also has a zipped compartment for notes and change. It’s luxurious enough like all chanel bags to be used in the evening. But understated enough for daytime use as well. The WOC is continually evolving and every year Chanel brings out lots of new styles and designs using all types of leathers and textures. For example one versions is the classic style. This is the one I have it is reminiscent of the classic flap with the quilted pattern leather and the small double CC logo on the front. Another style I have owned is the boy style WOC this one is slightly edgier it has the boy style closure on the front and more defined piping around the edge. There is also the reissue style WOC which is as you might have guessed modelled on the reissue bag. There are so many variations of the WOC available today on the market. They tend to bring them out as limited additions never to be re-released. The WOC is a great investment they have since their release a few years ago risen in value more than 50% (the first version of the WOC cost £850, now they sell for well over £2000) if you are looking to buy into Chanel as a brand and this is your first bag purchase then I would highly recommended the WOC due to its fair entry level price. And like all Chanel bags you can rest assured that the value will keep going up and up.

I’m so sorry you were treated like that! I find Chanel tend to be the worst when it comes to stuck-up SA’s unfortunately! WOC’s are so gorgeous!

Thank you Chloe, I really appreciate your kind words. I hope that SAs like this women will soon become a thing of the past. And that all customers will be treated equally and with the respect that they deserve.
      Thank you again.

That was just so ridiculous of that silly sales assistant! so annoying and definitely puts a dampner on your day when things like that happen..but of course you’re right, it wouldn’t stop me from buying Chanel, and i may have even complained about her that day. I have heard Chanel staff call it a WOC anyway…’s widely known now….no other word for her but plain rude! Thanks for posting Sarah. Christine (Sissy Sinclair) x

Thank you for your lovely message Christine, it’s a shame that this women decided to act in this way. A Woc is a Woc all the SAs I have met call it so. I worry that this women felt it acceptable to interrupt our conversation to then call us common or to say we used a common term. I should have mentioned it to a manager. I definitely need to be more confident when dealing with these kinds of difficult situations.
Thank you for reading my post Christine.

Madness! Why do some sales staff make us feel like we are unworthy to be in the store?

Brush it off, dust yourself down and move on. She’s not worth your energy..

Great blog post ! And yes, I call it a WOC too! And so so many SA’s in CHANEL that I know of!

      Thank you Nicole,

Thank you for reading my post and for your kind words. It was definitely a mad situation. A Woc is a Woc no matter what this lady says. Like you I have heard SAs use that term often. I hope this kind of pretentious attitude ends and that all customers are treated equally and with the respect we deserve. I have shaken this off writing this was like therapy for me.

      Thank you for reading.

      Love Sarah
